Vivekananda College is located in Diamond Harbour Road, Thakurpukur Kolkata – 700063. It was established in 1950 under the state government to relieve the load on students seeking admission to the colleges in Kolkata. The college campus covers an extensive area of 6.17 acres and has provided 19 undergraduate courses under the stream of Arts, Science and Commerce. Under the postgraduate section, it offers 4 courses.

The college is an affiliate of the University of Calcutta and accredited with grade ‘A’ by the NAAC. The college is the top no.1 college for science stream in Kolkata as well as the entire eastern India. The most sought after courses are Arts and Humanities. For admission to these courses, the student must complete his 10+2 with minimum 50 % marks in aggregate or 55% in the concerned course in case he fails to get 50% marks in 10+2 examination.

Vivekananda College: Scholarships and awards-

  • The College provides various awards and grants in recognition of students merits and performance. The College provides three prizes each of Rs. 1000/- value and three prizes each of Rs. 500/- value to the Toppers in Honours and General Courses- Arts, Science and Commerce and one prize of Rs.750/- to the Topper in B.Com Vocational course with a merit certificate.
  • The Teacher’s Council also awards Toppers of each department.
  • Department of Biological science provides K.S. Rao Memorial prize is awarded to the students who secured the highest mark and Debashis Kar Memorial prizes are awarded to the 1st & 2nd position holders of Zoology (Hons) & Botany (Hons) and B.Sc. (B io) General in every year respectively.
  • Department of Mathematics awards Principal G. D. Banerjee Memorial Prize to the best student in Mathematics and Krishna Mukherjee Memorial Prize is awarded to the students standing 1st and 2nd in Mathematics (Hons) every year.
  • The Department of Chemistry awards the Dr. Debesh Chandra Mukherjee Memorial Prize to the best student in Chemistry(Hons.) and the Dr. Motilal Nath award, to the student who secured 2nd position in Chemistry (Hons.) every year.
  • The Department of Environmental Science provides The Environment Award to the student who secured highest marks in University examination every year and one student for all round performances.
  • Department of Botany provides Bhagabati Devi Memorial Prize to the students standing 1st in Botany (hons.) and 1st in B.Sc. (Bio) General of the College.
  • Department of Computer Science awards Smt. Sandhya Baital Award to the students who stood 1st in Part I, Part II & Part III, of the College. It is also given to the outstanding student of the final year.

Vivekananda College: Placements-

The college has a placement cell which organises Campus Interviews from time to time as per the needs and requirements of various companies. This cell is organised under the leadership of Prof Subhendu Purkait and Prof Aakash Shaw.

Ques. What is the scope after joining the college?

Ans. After completing graduation, you can go on to complete your master’s. The college also has placement cells, you can join the placement programs, and give interviews for the jobs which you want. The college also has many cells and activities which you can partake in.
Also the college has good placement. Among the companies, the most important ones include TCS and Infosys. The minimum salary offered varies from 1.20 LPA to 3 LPA.

Ques. Which college is better “St. Xavier’s College” or “Vivekananda College” under CU?

Ans. According to the NIRF rankings 2020, St. Xavier’s college is ranked 7 among the best colleges in India while Vivekananda secured much lower ranks. In terms of the number of courses offered, Vivekananda College offers 19 courses for UG while St. Xavier’s College offers around 22 courses in total for UG. However, in science stream, Vivekanandais ranked 1 among the Colleges under CU. While Vivekananda College is a government college, the other is private. So the fees and expenses are higher for St. Xavier.
However, based on the performance, ratings and rankings provided by NIRF, it is clear that St. Xavier’s College is better between the two.
