Low Rank in JEE Main? These Alternate Options Might Help You

Last updated on September 16th, 2020 at 12:34 pm

JEE Main is an All India competitive examination conducted by NTA for admissions to various undergraduate engineering and architecture colleges. These mainly constitute-

While to get into an IIT, one must qualify JEE Main first and then JEE Advanced. Only the top 2.5 lac rankers of JEE Main are qualified for JEE Advanced. Low Rank in JEE Main is often demotivating for students. Very few students are hopeful of a suitable college at low ranks.

  • Due to the popularity of engineering and architecture degrees among Indian masses, the level of competition and difficulty of JEE Main is extremely high, imposing high pressure on the aspirants.
  • To increase the chances of scoring a better percentile rank and reputed college, most candidates choose to appear for both JEE Main January Session and JEE Main April Session.
  • The students have a limit of appearing for JEE Main only thrice in successive years.
  • Given the limited options for students, we shall discuss on the alternatives in case you score a low rank in JEE Main.
  • Here we will discuss 6 various options which might motivate students even in case of a low rank.

For starters, JEE Main exam is for three hours and includes three papers:

Paper 1: Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics – for B.E./BTech courses

Paper 2: Mathematics, Aptitude, Drawing – for B.Arch course

Paper 3: Mathematics, Aptitude, Planning – for B.Planning course

Students can check the official and latest updates regarding the JEE Main 2020 on the official website – jeemain.nta.nic.in – as well. Let us now discuss those 6 options.

Six Option Other than JEE Main

  • Most of the students believe that IITs is the only best option from JEE Main/Advanced.
  • IITs do offer more than 11,000 seats in various courses.
  • But the competition gets very high as IITs also consider 10+2 scores of students before admissions.
  • Out of the 10 lac students taking the exam, very few students find a suitable college with the desired course.
  • Even after IITs and NITs there are various alternatives for students.
  • For example, BITS Pilani has an average package of 14 LPA for B.Tech course.
  • So let us discuss some fancy alternatives in detail below.

1. Admission To NITs

  • Students aspiring to gain admission in the top NITs in India require a rank below 10,000.
  • However, it is possible to get in NIT with a score above 50,000.
  • Below is a table that provides insight on the closing ranks of numerous NITs based on previous year admissions:
Name of The Institute Course Details Closing Rank Category

2. Prepare The Best Back-up Option:

  • The students MUST plan and prepare for a back-up option before the exam results are out.
  • This ensures that they will not lose hope if they score low, as they have a direction on what to do next.
  • There are good options like giving State level examinations such as MHT CET, UPSEE, WBJEE, KCET, COMEDK. (For Example: With a good score in WBJEE, candidates can get admission in IIEST Shibpur, West Bengal for Mtech or Btech programmes)
  • Students also have the option to prepare for examinations conducted by other esteemed universities like UPESEAT for BTech Programme at the University of Petroleum & Energy Studies, VITEEE for Vellore Institute of Technology, KIITEE for KIIT University Engineering Programme and many more.

Few Details About Other Exams:

  • MHT-CET is usually conducted in the second week of May. The main criteria for students are to have 12th PCM with 50% for GEN & 45% for (OBC/SC/ST).
  • BITSAT is carried out in May 2019. It gives admission to students in engineering programs at BITS Pilani (Pilani, Goa, Hyderabad campuses). The students are required to have 75% marks in 12th PCM to be eligible.

It’s a common entrance for different campuses like VIT Vellore, VIT Chennai, VIT-AP and VIT Bhopal. The selection is done on the basis of merit and number of seats.
  • SRMJEEE is conducted by SRM University. SRM Colleges take admissions on JEE Main Rankings as well, along with 100% scholarships to top rankers of JEE Main. SRMJEEE is comparatively an easier exam with approximately 1.5 lac candidates appearing for the exam. The highest package from SRM Chennai was 42 LPA for the year 2020.
  • Examinations like KCET (conducted in the 1st week of May), EAMCET and AP-EAMCET ( both conducted in the 4th week of April) and WBJEE (conducted in April) require students to present the domicile certificate of the state:
  1. Karnataka domicile or 7 Years of Studies in Karnataka for KCET.
  2. Andhra Pradesh domicile for EAMCET and AP EAMCET.
  3. West Bengal domicile is required for WBJEE.
  4. Students can get admissions to top-tier state-engineering colleges through these exams!

Model Test Paper for SRMJEEE 2020

With the recent changes introduced in SRMJEEE examination, it is obvious that students are curious about the kind of questions that might be asked in the examination. Students have been introduced to two new sections, namely – English and Aptitude, which seem to have a very low weightage of just 15 marks, but also seem to give an extra edge to those who want to be ahead of everyone else. So, in order to help students, SRM Institute of Science and Technology has provided a model test paper or a sample question paper for all the sections of SRMJEEE 2020 as per the new exam pattern.

Students are advised to go through the sample paper and work on questions similar to those that appear in the sample paper. The sample paper has only 10 questions of each section with only 5 questions from the English section.

SRMJEEE 2020 Preparation Tips

Given below are some tips that students can follow to ensure a good score in SRMJEEE 2020-

Know Full Syllabus

Candidates must check the topics for all the subjects to devise a smart strategy and schedule their study pattern accordingly. It is important to work smart as there is a huge correlation between the syllabus of SRMJEEE 2020 and class XII syllabus. This can help you by achieving two goals at one shot, making it easier for students to outperform everyone else. When working on the complete syllabus, it is manageable to know what topics might need more attention. This will also allow candidates to save time spent otherwise on less important topics.

Know Exam Pattern

Exam Pattern for SRMJEEE 2020 has recently changed. Knowing the exam pattern will aid in familiarizing students with the type of questions asked, duration of the exam etc. One of the major advantages of the SRMJEEE exam is that there is no negative marking for wrong answers, so the candidates can take risks of attempting all the questions of the exam. This also helps improve their scores by a great margin.

Useful Reference Books

Multiple books are present in the market specializing in preparation for SRMJEEE 2020. But students must understand that the exam is much easier than other engineering entrance exams. The best reference book for SRMJEEE 2020 will be the NCERT books of class XI and XII. Some other reference books for SRMJEEE 2020 are already mentioned above.

Use Flash Cards and Short Notes

Flash cards for topics will help in quick revision of those topics during extreme emergencies. Short notes can be useful for the revision of important formulae along with some examples. Preparing 5 subjects, which combine the syllabus of almost two years of study of Class XI and Class XII, will be highly stressful during the last few days. Grabbing a large book increases your fear as it seems never-ending and important info is too much detailed in books. But in the end, there is little time for anything. This is when your flash cards and short notes become useful and will save a lot of time in revision.

Some other important points in preparation

There are some tips which do not necessarily consider your studies, but will aid in a healthy study pattern and less stress during studies. Refer to these tips below-

  • Keep up with your health. Consume nutritious food.
  • Try to take at least 6 hours of sleep for building energy.
  • Reward yourself with short study breaks. It helps to keep up with the focus and breaks the monotony.
  • Spend time on hobbies as they allow you to keep yourself pacified and relaxed.
  • Restrict your time on social media.

Normalisation of SRMJEEE Scores

SRMJEEE is an exam which is conducted in multiple sessions on a set number of days. It is very much possible that there can be a varying difficulty level in these various sessions. Therefore, exam authorities use the Normalisation process. Normalisation is a process for comparison of two or more scores under various difficulty levels. In order to adjust the variations in difficulty level at different slots of different sessions, normalization of the scores is done. The best utility of normalisation is a standard scale of evaluation for all the candidates. Under normalization, candidates generally have two types of marks-

  • Raw marks: These are the actual marks obtained by the candidate. SRM University does not release the final raw scores of candidates.
  • Normalised marks: These are the marks adjusted for a candidate considering the difficulty of his slot compared to the difficulty of other slots of his discipline. Usually, the normalised marks are increased if the candidate attempts a test in a difficult slot and decreased if the candidate attempts a test in an easy slot.

If at evaluation of difficulty level of the various slots, it is found that the slot of a candidate is comparatively easy when in relation to the other slot of his discipline then his normalized marks will be less than his actual or raw marks.

But if it is evaluated that the slot of the candidate is much more difficult than other slots of the same exam, then his normalized marks will be more than his actual or raw marks.

Normalisation Formula

The best way of normalisation is by calculating percentile scores of various slots of the same examination and proportionately increasing or decreasing the marks of the candidates. The percentile score of a candidate in SRMJEEE 2020 will tell us what percentage of candidates have scored below that candidate in SRMJEEE as well as what per cent of the candidates have scored above that particular candidate. A Percentile score is a value below which a certain per cent of observations falls or above which certain per cent exceeds. It is nothing but a measure of reading the ranks of various candidates by comparing them to 100.

For example, the 30th percentile is the value (or score) below which 30 per cent of the observations will be found and above which 70% of the candidates have scored.

The Percentile of a candidate can be calculated using the formula below-

SRMJEE Formula

SRMJEEE 2020 Answer Key

The answer key for SRMJEEE 2020 will layout the correct options to be chosen for all the questions asked in the question paper in SRMJEEE 2020. Soon after the exam is conducted, aspirants look for unofficial and official answer keys for the exam in order to check their expected scores for the examination.

The candidates can review their answers and then accordingly examine their marks secured in the online entrance examination using SRMJEEE 2020 Answer Keys. SRM University does not publish the answer keys for the exam as it is difficult for the authorities to reveal the answer keys of so many question papers, also because there are many slots for the examination. Answer Keys are also not published to prevent any misconceptions about the examination.

If under any circumstances, an official SRMJEEE answer key will be released, it will be made available on the official site by SRM Institute only. In lieu of the same, it is suggested that candidates rely on the unofficial keys for now.

Use SRMJEEE 2020 Answer Keys Right Way
