The National Testing Agency had faced a mixed backlash on social media from several students for the JEE Main 2020 September session. While dedicated students wanted the exam to be conducted at the earliest, many wanted to delay the exams further amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, with complete safety protocols and social distancing at exam centres, NTA successfully conducted the second session of JEE Main. But all of this was delayed by approximately 5 months. Students lost their precious time period and the academic year has still not commenced as JEE Main counselling for candidates is still ongoing.
This poses another challenge to NTA. When will JEE Main 2021 Registrations start? January is just two months away. Students are not aware of any important exam dates. Neither are they aware of eligibility rules, with any relaxations amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
There are questions being raised about the reduction in JEE Main Syllabus too. CBSE announced the reduction in syllabus much earlier in August 2020. But till now there has been no such notification from NTA or Ministry of Education for JEE Main 2021.
What Would Be Exam Dates Under Normal Conditions?
To ensure that all the processes from registrations, to admit cards to conducting the exam are in a sequential manner, the dates are notified much earlier in an official information bulletin / brochure.
- Application Forms are usually out in October or November.
- Form corrections are made during the mid-December.
- Admit Cards are released around the end of December.
- Around January, the exam centres are all set, and exams are successfully conducted.
Official Announcements Made For JEE Main 2021
There are only a few announcements made for JEE Main 2021, which does not necessarily assist the students in their exam preparations.
- Dr Ramesh Pokhriyal announced that JEE Main 2021 will be conducted in many other regional languages to ensure a better reach. Till now, it was only conducted in three languages – English, Hindi and Gujarati.
- For JEE Advanced 2021, candidates who were eligible for the 2020 session, but were not able to attend due to COVID-19 or similar reason, do not have to qualify JEE Main again. They shall be deemed eligible for JEE Advanced 2021 directly. Read more
Other than the two above, there have not been any other announcements made yet. Aspiring students are getting restless and are worried if they have the apt amount of time required to prepare for the upcoming session. Keep checking our portal for the latest updates on JEEMains!

In yet another relief to students, Mr Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ has announced that the JEE Main 2020 and JEE Advanced 2020 have been postponed. This decision was taken ‘keeping in mind the safety of students’ amid the COVID-19 pandemic as mentioned in his tweet. In a live webinar today with Sunil Chettri and PV Sindhu, he mentioned that JEE Main and NEET are important exams, yet safety of students is the first priority for the government. New exam dates for JEE Main 2020 are 1st to 6th September, 2020. Whereas, JEE Advanced 2020 is now scheduled for September 27th. Along with this, he has also postponed NEET 2020, which shall now be held on 13th September 2020, a week after JEE Main.
Keeping in mind the safety of students and to ensure quality education we have decided to postpone #JEE & #NEET examinations. JEE Main examination will be held between 1st-6th Sept, JEE advanced exam will be held on 27th Sept & NEET examination will be held on 13th Sept. pic.twitter.com/klTjtBxvuw

Students reacted happily towards this announcement with the tweet receiving more than 16,000 likes. A lot of students thanked him for this due measure. This would help not only the students, but also the government to focus on limiting the spread of coronavirus.

This seems more like a temporary relief to almost 25 lac students. Almost 10 lac students have registered for JEE Main 2020 and 15 lac students for NEET. The COVID-19 cases are spreading like wildfire every day with close to 21,000 cases found on 2nd July. Even though the government is taking extreme measures to curb this spread, it is unlikely that the situation will be in control by the end of August. A lot of students feel the decision to postpone the exam will go in vain as the government might have to postpone the exam dates again during August.
Congratulations to every student.Still there will be many mean people who may not have liked this decision, but we all know that safety first! 🙏❣️#ThankyouNTAandHRD

Mr Pokhriyal has asked students to keep preparing for the exam and to not stop studying. It is imperative that students must not stop as this gives them an opportunity to improve their chances of getting a good college. There are also few opinions on admission to colleges based on 10+2 scores. Meanwhile, NTA has not yet published any public notice on JEE Main 2020. The notice might explain more on the exam shifts and releasing date of JEE Main Admit Card. Keep checking our page for the latest updates on JEE Main and JEE Advanced 2020, and stay safe!

With the announcement of JEE Main new exam dates for the 2020 session i.e. from 18th to 23rd July 2020, Mr Ramesh Pokhriyal stated the mindset of the Ministry of Human Resource Development. No risks to be taken on the life of students. Mr Pokhriyal has now announced the new exam dates for JEE Advanced 2020 which shall be conducted by IIT Delhi this year on 23rd August 2020 now. The exam was previously scheduled for May 2020 but was later postponed by IIT Delhi amid the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic growing all across the country.
Students, here is the news you all have been waiting for!

I wish you all the best. pic.twitter.com/9EuAAyLwMH

The delay has caused a deep impact on the mental pressure of the students along with uncertainty about the future of admissions to various colleges. Although, this matter is being discussed, as stated by Mr Ramesh Pokhriyal, along with lowering the pressure on students by reducing the syllabus for the upcoming academic calendar.
Around 2.5 lakh candidates will finally appear for JEE Advanced 2020, after being screened through JEE Main 2020, which will then decide their allotment to the various undergraduate courses of 23 Indian Institute of Technology. Approximately there are 11,000 seats available in all the undergraduate courses of all the IITs combined. This means that out of 2.5 lakh candidates of IIT JEE Advanced 2020, only 11,000 might get through the final stage.
When will the academic calendar start?
It is being estimated that the academic calendar is delayed around 3 months. The JEE Advanced 2020 was supposed to be held on 17th May 2020 if the Coronavirus pandemic has not hit the world. With new dates for the 3rd week of August, the exam is delayed by 3 months. There have been no scheduled dates released for the JEE Main Counselling Process which usually takes up to 2 months. This implies that the calendar might tentatively start from October 2020. With a long delay causing an imbalance in studies, it is also important to note whether the syllabus that will be reduced for the upcoming calendar year will affect further studies of students during colleges as nevertheless, almost all topics of various subjects are deemed necessary for advanced college-level studies.

As per the latest developments and a recent tweet by Press Trust of India (PTI), HRD ministry will announce the new dates for JEE Main 2020 April session on 5th May 2020. Both of these exams have been postponed due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak in the country, until the end of May as per the official notice. Reactions concerning safety of students
In response to the tweet above, reactions poured in concerning the health of students. Many users were concerned about risking lives of students as the exams will ultimately lead to breaking social distancing which is being considered the ‘new normal’ to combat against the fatal COVID-19 disease.
A few reactions also came in regarding lockdown by a few states. Recently, UP CM Yogi Adityanath had announced there will be no public gatherings until June 30. Students were concerned about how the exams will be conducted with these disputes in lockdown among states and the central government.
@HRDMinistry @DrRPNishank why so early announcing the tentative dates? Let’s things settle down then exam can be conducted, Italy Spain announced schools / colleges not gonna open before October, Don’t risk life of lakhs of students
— Rahul (@WOB5555) May 3, 2020
Let this COVID19 cases end.
— Suzaan Ahmed (@ahmed_suzaan) May 3, 2020
Many students also considered this as a good initiative as this will put an end to the anxiety among candidates. Students will be able to focus on studies and will have some assurance regarding the future of admissions in their dream college.
Safety measures will be taken
It is likely that the new dates announced for both JEE Main as well as NEET will be for exams being conducted in or after June 2020. Government, as well as the HRD Ministry, must have prepared for the precautionary measures to be taken to conduct these examinations. With lockdown being eased for Orange and Green zones of the country, it seems possible that the examination will be conducted soon. Moreover, to ensure that sanitization is followed, NTA might conduct the examinations in a single shift under a long set of at least 10 to 14 days.
