National Institute of Oceanography [NIO] Panji: Admission, Ranking, Courses, Fees, Placement, Scholarship

The National Institute of Oceanography is an autonomous research organization in India to carry out scientific research and studies of extraordinary oceanographic features of the Northern Indian Ocean. It is one of the 37 constituent laboratories of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR) having its headquarters in Goa.

The institute offers various integrated, Post – graduate and Doctorate programs in Science and Engineering. Candidates seeking admission can apply for courses online through the official website.

With about 5000 Ph.D students on its rolls in Science and Engineering for doctoral studies, AcSIR is the largest institution in India and one of the largest institutions in the world in this regard.

NIO Panji Admission

  1. AcSIR is currently inviting applications for August 2021 and January 2022 sessions of admission to Ph.D. (Sciences), Ph.D. (Engineering). M.Tech, M.Sc, and IDDP (Integrated Dual Degree Program in Engineering M.Tech + Ph.D.) on their official website. Last date for submission of online application: May 31, 2021 (upto 23:59 hrs.) for August-2021 session and August 31, 2021 (upto 23:59 hrs.) for Jan-2022 session early admissions.
  2. Admission Portal for the PGD-PMQC program of NPL is currently Live [Post Graduate Diploma Course in Precision Measurement and Quality Control] in their official admission website.
  3. The official website of NIO is https://www.nio.org/ but the Admission process of NIO is entirely conducted online through their official admission website http://acsir.res.in.
  4. AcSIR is CSIR’S own University and that of NIOs’ as well.
  5. The Admission is based solely on the Merit and Entrance exam.
  6. As per the AcSIR Online Admission Portal, the admission process is divided into two phases:
    • Sign-Up Phase
    • Online Application Form Phase
  7. An applicant can sign up by submitting an online application to any one of the sessions and for any one program of study.
  8. On completion of AcSIR Online Application form, AcSIR Application Number (AAN) will be generated e.g. AcSIR12345.
  9. This AAN shall be used in future correspondence between the applicant and AcSIR.
  10. Shortlisted candidates will be intimated, followed by a Test and/or Interview at designated centres on the dates announced.
  11. On the basis of this Test/Interview, the final selection would be made.

NIO Panji Key Highlights

  1. The institute is home to 170 scientists (sanctioned strength is 200) of whom about 120 are Ph.D. holders, about 210 technical and supporting staff, and close to 120 administrative staff.
  2. The numbers of doctoral students, project assistants, and post doctoral fellows have grown significantly with the growth in research programmes. The largest increase has been in the number of project assistants since CSRI introduced the “Project Assistant Scheme” to tap the services of fresh graduates for enhancing the productivity of its institutions.
  3. The major research areas include the four traditional branches of oceanography- biology, chemistry, physics, and geology, and geophysics besides ocean engineering, marine instrumentation, and archaeology.
  4. NIO has been collaborating with a large number of research and academic institutions all over the world (Australia, China, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Oman, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, UK, and the USA) as well as international agencies such as ASEAN and SAARC.
