National Institute of Design-[NID], Ahmedabad Admission 2021: Dates, Selection Criteria, Eligibility, Application Process

The National Institute of Design is an internationally acclaimed institute in the field of Design. It was established in 1961 in Ahmedabad and was the foremost institute to offer multi-disciplinary education in Design. The institute has two other campuses in Gandhinagar and Bengaluru. The institute is an autonomous body under the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, Government of India. The institute offers bachelor’s and master’s programmes. There are a total number of 125 seats in Bachelor of Design and 126 seats in M.Des.

The institute holds the DAT exam for admission, which takes place at two levels. The DAT preliminary exam was held on 14th March, and the result will be released in the first week of June. The DAT mains exam date will be mentioned on the admit card, and those who have cleared the prelims are eligible for the main exam.

NID Ahmedabad: B.Des Admissions 2021

Bachelor of Design is a four-year course, and the institute offers specialisations in three faculties.

Faculty of communication Design

  • Graphic Design -19 seats

Faculty of industrial Design

  • Ceramic and glass Design-13 seats

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Candidates should have passed 10+2 or equivalent in any stream from a recognised state/ central board.

Selection Criteria:

  • Selection of the candidates is made based on the DAT exam, which has a prelim and the main level.
  • Only those candidates who clear the prelim exam are eligible for the main exam. After the main exam, the merit list is declared based on the percentile.

NID Ahmedabad: M.Des Admissions 2021

M.Des is a two-and-a-half-year course and has specialisations through three different faculties.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Bachelor’s degree for a minimum of 4 years with any area of specialisations after class 12th OR
  • Full-time Diploma of minimum four years in Design, fine arts, architecture, applied arts after 12th standard. OR
  • Bachelor’s degree of minimum three years in any area of specialisation after class 12th.

Selection Criteria:

  • Selection is made based on the DAT exam, which has two stages. The prelim and the main exam.
  • The DAT prelims consist of two parts, a common Design aptitude test and a discipline-specific test. Those who choose two disciplines will have to give two separate discipline specific tests.

How to apply at NID Ahmedabad?

The application process takes place in three steps:

Step 1. Register

The first step is to visit  https://admissions.nid.edu/NIDA2021/Default.aspx  and register yourself with a valid email and mobile number. Candidates must check regularly check their SMS and email.

Step 2. Fill the online application form.

Fill in all the required details in the form and save the details by clicking on the save and exit to complete the process.

The candidates also must choose the disciplines they want to M.Des course. A candidate can select a maximum of two disciplines.

Step 3. Upload Documents and Signature

Upload a recent passport photograph and signature of 100kb in size. Category certificates, wherever required, also need to be submitted. An application fee of Rs 3000 needs to be paid once the form is filled.

Ques. What is the category-wise reservation of seats at NID Ahmedabad?

Ans. The category-wise reservation for the institute is as follows:

  • Ten percent of the total seats are reserved for the general-economic weaker section.
  • Twenty-seven percent of the seats are reserved for a non-creamy layer of the other backward classes.
  • Fifteen percent of seats are reserved for scheduled caste, and 7.5 percent are reserved for people belonging to the scheduled tribe.
Ques. What are the details of the DAT prelims exam conducted by the National Institute of Design?

Ans. For the B.des course, DAT prelims is a 3 hour long 100 marks examination. It is a paper-pen exam with text and visual questions. The question paper is only in the English language.
For the M. Des programme, the prelims comprises two parts. The first part is a common Design aptitude test, and the second part is a discipline specific test. The total duration of 2 hours 30 minutes. Those who want to apply for two disciplines will have to give separate discipline specific tests.

Ques. In which all cities is the DAT exam conducted by NID?

Ans. The exam is conducted in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chennai, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Goa, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kurukshetra, Lucknow, Mumbai, New Delhi, Nagpur, Patna, Ranchi, Raipur, Shimla, Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayawada.
It is possible that a city has more than one examination centre, and no change will take place once a centre is allotted.

Ques. What are the requirements for overseas students to apply to the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad?

Ans. Foreign candidates with a valid passport other than the Republic of India are eligible for seats under the overseas category. Fifteen percent of seats are reserved for the overseas candidate. NRIs who have Indian passports do not fall in this category. The candidates need to give the DAT exam as per the schedule and visit the campus in person. Documents required are a valid passport, class 10,12, and graduation mark sheet and a valid visa.
