JEE Main Preparation Tips by Experts – Study Plan for Students Recommended

Since we have covered relevant topics and books for JEE Main 2020, we’ll dive into the next phase of planning a proper time table.

Time table can be tailored to one’s efficiency and habits, but a general pattern has to follow which was emphasized as follows-

Per day (Compulsory) Maths at least two hours Physics at least two hours Chemistry at least two and a half hours
Per week (Required) One topic wise / Chapter wise test At least one topic wise / Chapter wise test At least one topic wise / Chapter wise test
Per month Cumulative test on above-covered topics in the same pattern as JEE Mains. Cumulative test on the above-covered topics in the pattern of JEE Mains. Cumulative test on above-covered topics as just similar to JEE Mains.
After Preparation Attempt maximum number of Grand Tests in Maths, Physics, and chemistry like JEE Main final test

JEE Main Preparation Tips by Experts – What is the best method to study?

Some of the critical points to bear in mind to have the best study method, according to the experts are:

  • Never have doubts in mind. Make it a point to get clarity in concepts and thus build up your confidence in the subject. Don’t think twice to clarify your doubts immediately with the help of your mentor.
  • Identify the common strategies for solving problems and numerical. Accuracy is the game point. Any errors and you’ll be out of the game. Know your formulas and shortcuts.
  • Have your notes. Your notes should contain your areas of weaknesses in three subjects and loopholes. Maintaining your notes is unique to you and isn’t a reflection of someone else.
  • Once when you have covered your concepts and basics, at least one hour of your preparation should be kept aside to solve nearly 15 to 20 different types of problems in that particular chapter in that specific subject.
  • Besides your notes, have an error book in hand covering each test. After solving those error questions, jot down a comment specifying reasons for the mistake. Do not repeat them next time.
  • Concentrate on one subject at a time. Avoid mixing up different topics.
  • After completion of every two topics, focus on solving as many as mixed conceptual questions in those topics. A more significant number of multiple and multi-theoretical problems you solve, better is your grasp on the matter.
  • Consistency is vital throughout the JEE Main preparation. The mindset of every day as your last day will complement your consistent efforts.
  • No partiality to be followed here. Equal importance is given to all three subjects. It doesn’t matter if you love one subject over another. If you like a subject, be sure that it’s your strong point and try not to lose any marks. If you hate one, be sure to concentrate your efforts there so that it doesn’t turn out to be your weak spot.
  • A typical JEE aspirant on an average solves around 2 to 3 thousand different conceptual oriented questions per subject on par with the JEE main standards. Practice previous years’ question papers
  • The essential point not to forget is to stay far away from distractions like smartphones, laptops, television, or a PC. It is difficult to focus, and once you are in focus mode, distractions can lure out of it quickly. It’s a mammoth-like task to refocus. Do not waste your energy on unnecessary tasks.
  • Lastly, do not ignore your health. Health is your fuel to drive your body. Eat right and exercise well. A healthy body and sound mind can face any hurdles in life.

Low JEE Main Score/Rank? Evaluating These Options Might Help

Last updated on September 16th, 2020 at 01:34 pm

“The greatest test of courage on earth is to bear defeat without losing heart”

This proverb holds true in different practical aspects of life as well. There might be a lot of students who prepared diligently throughout the entire year or maybe for even two years but still could not get good rank due to some unfortunate reasons. For them, it is important not to lose hope at this point of time or get disheartened even if this was their second attempt. Now is the time to be vigilant and apply a new strategy of analyzing and improvising which might not help them to make it to IITs but will definitely help them seek admission in good reputed colleges such as NITs, IIITs, GITFs, etc.

If the student could not secure a good JEE Main Score, there might be a problem either with their preparation or the execution. Hence, the first step is to analyze where the void is. For example,

  • There might be students who were not completely prepared for the exam and left some of the important topics which unfortunately came in the exam. Therefore, there was a lag in preparation.
  • There might be a student who could not perform well because he got anxious during the exam and committed silly errors which resulted in a drop in rank. This is an example of a problem in the execution.

So, it is better for them to analyze what went wrong and how they can work on it. Now, there are three options which you can choose from:

  1. Prepare for the next attempt and drop this year
  2. Settle with the college that you can get with your JEE Main score
  3. Wait for successive counselling sessions

Let us dive deep into each option and students can make a wise decision if you secure a low JEE Main score.

1. Prepare for the Next Attempt and drop this year

This is an alternative which you can choose if you have appeared for the first attempt with the board exams. This will help in learning and studying more for JEE Main and keeping your focus only on this exam.

  • Taking a one-year drop will give you an added advantage since you would have already experienced the exam once and also your preparation would just need more focus and brush-up.
  • Complete dedication and determination of study will sail you through the JEE Main exam.

  • From 2019, JEE Main is conducted twice a year.
  • Candidates have an option to not drop a year and prepare for the second attempt if they are not satisfied with the result of the first attempt.
  • So candidates have a chance to appear twice in a year. If a candidate secures a low JEE Main score in the first attempt, then he/she can appear for the second attempt.

However, if you are taking a drop for your third attempt, it can be risky and you need to make a wise and calculated step. You should be confident about this decision and be aware of the shortcomings of your preparation and the reasons not to score well in the past attempts. If one is confident about the preparation and knows that dedicating one year will help them to get over these shortcomings, then one can take this decision to drop another year. But if the students have doubts over their preparation and are not sure, then they can choose the other options which we will discuss further.

2. Settle with the college that you can get with your JEE Main score

It is pretty obvious that every student who is preparing for JEE Main exam dreams of getting into the top IITs or NITs. However, with the limited number of seats in these colleges, it is practically impossible for every student to get admission in these colleges.

  • Further, there are more than 4500 engineering colleges throughout India. There are ample opportunities for students since these colleges also have skilled faculties and good resources.
  • The other private and state universities offer B.E or B.Tech courses and have a wide range of courses and specializations to choose from.
  • The basic concepts of teaching and the engineering essence would remain almost the same in every college.
  • The students who are getting other private universities and colleges should not hesitate to opt for these.
  • To have a better picture, they can contact the students from various colleges and get to know about the quality of education in these colleges.
  • They can also visit websites and placement reports to get a fair idea about the college they are opting for.
  • Checking if their alumni are holding good positions in the industry can also be a parameter to judge the college.

All these factors will help in deciding the college in which you wish to spend your next crucial four years. Hence, the students are advised to broaden their perspective and look beyond IITs and NITs too if they have already attempted JEE Main twice.

3. Wait for Successive Counselling Sessions

There is also a good probability that you might get a good college in the subsequent JEE Main counselling rounds.

  • A lot of students drop or change colleges, which helps the other students to get a chance.
  • A lot of students are not sure about the result of the successive counselling and they end up making decisions in haste due to delayed counselling sessions.
  • It is important to first analyse the complete situation and decide after considering each aspect.
  • There are cases where students got into very good universities during mop-up counselling rounds.

Hence, one should wait and appear in each counselling session in which they are eligible to attend. This is also a great option to get a private college which is in the range of your marks. The placements and education quality of some renowned colleges are up to the mark with IITs. Therefore, keep calm and choose wisely.

JEE Main Preparation Tips for Class XI and XII Students

This section highlights JEE Main preparation tips for class XI and XII students.

Boards are important

  • Class XI and XII students must focus on their board exams
  • This is because they are equally important as JEE Main or JEE Advanced
  • Also, the aggregate percentage of boards is a deciding factor of a candidate’s eligibility in JEE Main and JEE Advanced
  • Due to tough competition among students, many top colleges do not enrol students below an aggregate of 90% in 12th

Note: NTA has deducted minimum percentage criteria for JEE Main 2020 April/September session. Only the 12th pass certificate is applicable as an eligibility norm. This is due to the partially cancelled 12th exam of several boards owing to corona pandemic.

Understanding weaknesses

  • Many JEE Main 2020 aspirants take 11th class lightly to focus on 12th exams which is a wrong approach
  • Class XI subjects consist of topics that create a base for the topics of Class XII
  • To make concepts of 12th clear, one must understand the basics of the same in 11th class itself.

Time flies

  • Time management is important
  • Manage time in such a way that you get enough time for study, household chores, leisure and other activities
  • Initially start by calculating the time consumed in day-to-day activities using a stopwatch
  • Then, prepare a time limit for every activity
  • Give a major portion of time for studies

Create short notes

  • Students must create a habit of maintaining short notes of important topics
  • This helps in revision a few days before the examination
  • Short notes are handy when time is less
  • Also, short notes are useful when one just needs to revise formulas, equations and short cut methods.

Do not procrastinate

  • It is not possible for JEE Main aspirants to decide how long will it take to cover entire JEE Main syllabus or JEE Advanced
  • Some benefits from the rigorous study while some scores well with less effective study
  • Stay focused and do hard work to a limit which is required
