Joint Admission Board (JAB) Drops Class 12th Marks As Eligibility For IIT Admissions

As per the latest announcement by Education Minister, Mr Ramesh Pokhriyal, Joint Admission Board (JAB) has decided to let go the eligibility criterion of Class 12th Marks for admission to IITs. This decision was taken because of the partial cancellation of class 12th exams by several education boards of the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic spreading at large.

This JEE Advanced Eligibility Criteria also known as top 20 percentile rule, required students to score at least 75% in their respective boards or be the top 20 percent scorers of that particular board, in order to take admission to any of the 23 IITs. JoSAA announced the top 20 percentile cut offs of each education board before the beginning of counselling every year.

The criterion was required to be fulfilled by students other than the JEE Advanced scores that decided which seat a candidate can opt for. But now, all the qualified candidates of class 12th exams will be eligible for an IIT, notwithstanding the number of marks they have scored in class 12th boards.

It is being said that JAB has decided to drop this criterion just this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The rule will be introduced back in the next year. The rule has been criticised by many such as Anand Kumar of Super 30, saying it disapproves students of backward communities from joining IITs as many do not have education from great schools.
