Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research [JIPMER], Pondicherry: Dates, Eligibility, Selection Criteria, Application Process

Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research, Pondicherry was established in 1964 and it offers a variety of undergraduate and postgraduate courses such as MBBS, MD/MS and B.Sc/M.Sc programs along with diploma and certificate courses.

Admission to its various courses offered are done on the basis of the JIPMER Entrance Exam conducted every year.

  • For MBBS, one must have passed 10+2 Higher/Senior Secondary Examination with Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Biotechnology.
  • MBBS Admission will be based on NEET exam from current year onwards.
  • For MD/MS courses, The candidates must possess MBBS or an equivalent Degree recognized by the Medical Council of India.
  • For MDS, The applicants must possess BDS or an equivalent Degree recognized by the Dental Council of India.
  • Admission to all the PG will be done on the basis of JIPMER PG exam.
  • The Selection for Ph.D. registration will be done on the basis of a Written Examination followed by an interaction with the PhD Admission Committee.

JIPMER PDF and PDC admissions-

The institute is inviting candidates for their post doctoral fellowship programme(PDF) and Post doctoral certification courses (PDC). Interested candidates can apply to the courses by visiting the website of the institution. Both the courses offer various specialization which are as follows-

Some details regarding the admission to the PDF and PDC courses are mentioned below-

  • Entrance exams will be done through CBT in online mode
  • Admit cards can be downloaded from the website www.jipmer.edu.in (The Hall Tickets will be made available through Internet download ONLY and NOT by Post)
  • Number of seats for PDF course is 8 and for PDC 11
  • A link to the mock test of the exam has been posted on the college’s website and candidates can refer to that for their preparation.
  • The duration of the examination is 1½ hours (One hour and Thirty minutes).
  • The Entrance Examination consists of 100 single best response type multiple choice questions (MCQs) having four options.
  • +4 marks for each correct answer, -1 for wrong answers and no marks will be awarded for answers selected to be reviewed later or not attempted.

Eligibility criteria-

  • Candidates must have qualified MD/DNB, Mch/DNB( Hepato-Pancreatic-Biliary Surgery) MS/DNB(Gynaecology Oncology) in the specialized field for which they are applying for
  • Indian Nationals or Non-resident Indians are eligible

Selection criteria-

  • Admissions will be given on the basis of the merit list published by the institution post the examination. (minimum qualifying marks 50%)
  • Candidates securing less than the minimum Percentage in the entrance exam will not be considered for admission.

Eligibility criteria-

  • The candidate must be an Indian citizen or NRI. Foreign national students have to take prior permission from the medical council of India.
  • The applying candidate should be 17 years of age as of December 31, 2020.
  • Must have qualified 10+2 examinations from a recognized board with a minimum of 50% or above. Candidates awaiting their 10+2 results are also eligible.
  • The candidate must have opted for Physics, Chemistry, biology, and English in 10+2.


Selection is done on the basis of scores obtained in NEET exams. The registration to NEET exams generally begins in the month of March. Candidates wishing to take admissions in MBBS can appear in the exam.
