In the recent video conference meeting over COVID-19 crisis in the country, held with Chief Ministers of various states as well as Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal Khattar raised an important question for anxious students. He asked the government to get rid of the unpredictability over dates of various competitive examinations such as JEE Main, NDA (1) and NEET 2020. These exams are conducted for admissions in engineering, defence and medical institutions respectively. Mr Khattar has urged the Government to take a decision on the uncertain dates for JEE Main and other exams.
JEE Main and NEET are conducted by National Testing Agency (NTA), which has postponed the exams until May end as per the official announcement. JEE Main is a screening test for IIT JEE Advanced as well as for admissions to various engineering colleges. While NEET is the only examination held for admissions to medical institutes of the country. Meanwhile, the National Defence Academy and Naval Academy Examination or NDA (1) is conducted by UPSC as a screening test of defence aspirants for admissions in the National Defence Academy or Naval Academy.
Recently, the Union HRD Minister, Mr Ramesh Pokhriyal, said that the JEE Main exam could only be conducted in June 2020 due to growing cases of COVID-19 all over the country. Safety of teachers and students is the first priority for him.
UPSC NDA exam was also scheduled for April 2020 similarly to JEE Main 2020 April Session. UPSC released a notification during the end of March 2020 after the lockdown, stating that the exam has been postponed until further notice. There was no announcement regarding proposed dates or week.
While efforts are being made to bring the economic activities back on track, students and parents are worried about the future. There is tension among parents regarding the arrangement of admission and tuition fees, while students are under continuous stress due to the improbable future of their career.
