National Institute of Technology Meghalaya or NITM is situated in Shillong, Meghalaya and is one of the top engineering institutes of India. The institute was established under the NIT Act of 2007. NIT Meghalaya offers various courses in the field of science and engineering like B.Tech, M.Tech, M.Sc and PhD.

  • Initially, the classes were held in Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology, Surat. Currently, the college functions from a temporary campus of North Eastern Hill University in Shillong. However, the main NIT Meghalaya campus in Sohra, Cherrapunjee is proposed to be completed by 2021.
  • NIT Meghalaya Ranking is at 61st position in the Engineering category by NIRF Ranking for the year 2020.
  • In the list of India Today Top Govt. Engineering Colleges, it is ranked at the 29th position.

Eligibility Criteria for B.Tech

Below is given the information regarding eligibility criteria of B.Tech at NITM-

  • The candidates who wish to get admission must have passed 10+2 with 75% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics from recognized board or University. SC/ST candidates must have 65% aggregate.
  • However, this criteria has been scrapped for 2021 admissions, and candidates are only required to pass Class XII this year.
  • Aspiring candidates must have cleared JEE Main examination with minimum qualifying cut off depending on their category. Only after that they will be listed under Rank Lists and can participate in JoSAA Counselling.

NIT Meghalaya has taken the initiative and launched the concept of online learning. Face to face teaching has been scrapped for the entire semester and the classes have been switched to online mode.

NIT Meghalaya: Reservations

Admission in NITs and IIITs in B.Tech course is made on the basis of the scores obtained in the national level entrance examination JEE Main. The exam is conducted throughout the country in online mode. JoSAA (Joint Seat Allotment Authority) is the authority which is responsible for the process of counselling and seat allotment at different institutes. The reservation percentage of different reserved categories in the seat allotment process is given in the table below:

  • Along with the reservations for various categories, NIT Meghalaya also has reservations for female candidates. As per the seat matrix provided by JoSAA for NITM, 29 seats are reserved for female candidates.
  • All NITs have reservations under state quota. Hence, NIT Meghalaya also has 50% reservation for students with state domicile. In case state quota seats are left vacant, they are transferred to All India Quota Seats.


Various Facilities Provided At NIT Meghalaya

NIT Meghalaya is known for its beautiful campus in Shillong, Meghalaya. There are a number of facilities offered to the students like a central library, accommodation facilities, sports, gym, meditation area, cafeteria, etc. Some of the main facilities offered are:

  • Hostel Facility: The college has 5 hostels for boys and 2 hostels for girls to provide accommodation to the students. Facilities offered in the NIT Meghalaya hostels includes wi-Fi, tight 24*7 security, canteen area, sports area, gym facility, etc.
  • Library: Central Library of NITM has a huge collection of 13,000 text and reference books, along with e-resources. Digital library collaboration with ACM, IEEE and ASME is also provided free of cost to students.
  • Health Care Center: NIT has engaged a doctor who visits the campus thrice a week. The college also has an agreement with a reputed hospital of the state for treatment of its students, faculty and staff on a priority basis. Expenses are reimbursed by NIT.
  • Additional Facilities: The institute also offers many other facilities like transport facility, yoga and meditation facilities, banks, ATMs, centralized cooling system, etc.

  • National Institute of Technology Meghalaya has a well experienced and dedicated staff of 93 members.
  • All the staff and faculty members are very well versed and highly qualified in their respective fields.

NIT Meghalaya Scholarships

National Institute of Technology Meghalaya offers various scholarships and financial aid to the students of various categories. The scholarships are provided to the meritorious students who have good academic records and excellent achievement in extracurricular activities.

  1. Merit Scholarship: 40% tuition fee waiver is awarded under this scholarship to top 5% B.Tech students of each branch. The CGPA of the students must be 8.5 or above. All students receiving this scholarship will also get a merit certificate.
  2. Merit-cum-Means Scholarship: MCM scholarship is also provided to top 5% B.Tech students with 40% tuition fee award. The students must come under the non-creamy layer and maintain a CGPA of 7.0 or above. The annual income of parents must not be higher than INR 4.5 LPA to avail of this scholarship.
