Alongside, the section and topic-wise analysis of the previous year JEE Main question papers are other useful tools while preparing for the exam. Let us read JEE Main Preparation Tips 2020 along with subject and topic-wise analysis of previous year JEE Main exams.

How to Prepare for JEE Main – Basic Preparation Tips

As we all know cracking JEE Main exam is not an easy task, and it requires lots of effort and focus. There are more than 100 colleges where one can get admission but aspirants always look for the top engineering colleges in India. So let us take a look at a few basic JEE Main preparation tips.

Time Management

A JEE Main preparation time table is the best way of managing time efficiently. You have to stick to it and prioritize your set goals. Also, be sure to set deadlines. Cover the entire syllabus within the stipulated time.

Know the Syllabus

Be thorough with the JEE Main 2020 syllabus. Practice familiar topics and revise them regularly. Practice the topics that seem tough for you on a regular basis. Devote extra time to these topics. In addition, go through the topics from which most of the questions are asked.

Practice JEE Main Mock Tests

Solving mock tests and practice papers can tell your level of preparation for JEE Main. It enables the candidates to know the level of the exam so they can work on their weak topics too. Nowadays, a deep analysis of mocks is easily available online. It helps in understanding accuracy and about the strong, weak and time-consuming topics.

Organize your studying and revision time. Revision ensures you are on track with the topics that are not under purview but must be worked on. Make sure that you practice previous years’ JEE Main question papers. Revise the topics every alternate day or at least twice a week.

With practice, you will build speed in core topics. This speed must be maintained during the examination as well. Since there is no sectional time limit, ensure that you solve enough questions from each section within 1 and a half hour such that the score reaches the expected cutoff.

If you follow the speed rule in the first 90 minutes, follow the accuracy rule in the next 90 minutes. Instead of solving maximum questions, try solving what you can, but with accurate answers. As a result, it will help you build your score and probably help in improving overall rank considered for IITs.

JEE Main Preparation Tips by 2020 Toppers

This year, 9 candidates scored a perfect 100 percentile in JEE Main 2020 January session out of the 9 lakhs+ applicants. Candidates who took JEE Main 2020 said that they found the mathematics section most difficult. Although, the other sections were moderate to easy. Let us see what they can contribute to your JEE Main Preparation Tips.

Strategy of Toppers

  • Kaushal Kumar Reddy: He said he found JEE Main exam moderate in difficulty level. His basic strategy was to ensure that his basic concepts of Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics were clear. Reddy followed NCERT but preparing from NCERT Books is not enough. To sum up, you will need better practice, a higher understanding of concepts and proper dedication towards learning.
  • Landa Jitendra: A resident of Andhra Pradesh, Landa Jitendra, scored took coaching from Sri Chaitanya institute. He said the coaching center and school helped him study. The teachers at the coaching center told him when what and how to study. He referred to the study material provided by the coaching center and used to attempt mock tests every weekend.
  • Nishant Agarwal: Nishant said he was preparing from the very beginning and aimed to score full marks in JEE Main examination. Lastly, he got the best support and motivation from the teachers at the coaching center.
  • Divyanshu Agarwal: This candidate also scored 100 percentile by self-study. He said 8-9 hours of self-study helped him to achieve 100 scores in JEE Main examination.

Almost all of these top scorers have one thing in common. Their will to learn more and more.

JEE Main Preparation Tips for Class XI and XII Students

In this section, we will throw light on the JEE Main preparation tips for class XI and XII students.

Boards are important

Class XI and XII students must focus on their board exams. This is because they are equally important as JEE Main or Advanced. More importantly, the aggregate percentage of boards is a deciding factor of a candidate’s eligibility in JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Not just that, due to heavy competition among students, many top-tier colleges do not take students below the aggregate percentage of 90% in boards.

Understanding weaknesses

A lot of students take Class XI subjects lightly and ‘plan’ their strategy for ‘cracking the XII boards’. This is a very wrong approach and will hit back hard. Class XI subjects consist of topics that create a base for the topics of Class XII. If a student is facing difficulty in a topic of class XII, he/she must try to figure out the core concept of that topic, which often dates back to class XI.

Time flies

Time management is important. Manage time in such a way that you get enough time for study, household chores, leisure and other activities. Firstly, start calculating the time consumed in your day-to-day activities using a stopwatch. And prepare a time limit for every activity. Give a large proportion of your time to studies.

Create short notes

Students must create a habit of maintaining short notes of important topics. This will benefit during the final moments of practice. During the shortage of time, the short notes come in handy. Also, students can easily refer to important formulae, short-cut methods and other essential information that they have jotted down while preparing for the topics.

Do not procrastinate

One cannot decide how long it will take to prepare for JEE Main and JEE Advanced. Some people have scored great within a year of preparation and some have scored only a decent score even with 3 years of preparation.  Studying 6 hours daily for 365 days with full dedication might provide huge benefits rather than studying just 2 or 3 hours for 2 years (730 days!).

How to make the JEE Main 2020 Preparation Plan?

Given below are some points to adhere to while making a plan for the preparation of JEE Main 2020 –

  • Students must have a good idea of the expected weightage of various topics in JEE Main.
  • Give more time to topics that have heavy weightage in the examination.
  • Segregation of topics is necessary. Segregate your plan for difficult, moderate and easy topics. Difficult topics must be given more time.
  • Sequential study is required in subjects like Mathematics. Plan your monthly schedule based on the same. Core topics must be prepared first. For example, one cannot understand Integral Calculus before understanding the basics of Limits and Derivatives as well as Differentiation.
  • Add at least 1 month for revision in the plan. Plan the revision in such a way that all topics are covered during revision. If you feel that the time might be insufficient, allot more than a month for revision. Prepare for contingencies.

Steps required in JEE Main Preparation Plan

  • Begin your plan by studying various chapters of the subject while understanding the core concepts of the topics. Use NCERT books or short video lectures for this to quickly grab the basics.
  • Secondly, make short notes on topics. Ensure to pen down only the most important information and formulae. Do not jot down each and everything else.
  • Thirdly, once the topic has been studied thoroughly, try to recollect and analyze up to what extent have you understood the topic.
  • After that start solving the questions of the topics. Post that, if the question is still unsolved, continue with reviewing the solution and solve the question yourself again.
  • Also, try attempting the topic-wise mock tests available for free on various learning portals (given below). Once the whole subject is completed, try attempting sectional mock tests. This will give you an idea about your strong and weak points.
  • Once the whole syllabus is complete, an attempt at least 1 mock in every 2 days.
  • Continuous revision is necessary for exams like JEE Main. Moreover, the most important part of JEE Main Preparation Tips is continuous revisions using short notes and solving questions of various topics and difficulties each and every day but in a planned manner.
  • It is important to clear all the doubts regarding any topics. Keep a separate doubt book. Use the ‘Doubtnut app’ given below to get solutions to your doubts as soon as possible.
  • Take the necessary breaks to keep yourself going. Fatigue could be mental as it could be physical. Try to maintain a desk and chair position for 3 hours but do take breaks during studies. Watch a movie or go out for a walk with friends.
