JEE Main Important Topics & Chapters: Weightage-wise breakdown and Trend Analysis

JEE Main is one of the toughest competitive exams for engineering aspirants. Learning the formulae, chemical equations, steps for some questions and other rotting sections can never guarantee a great score in JEE Main. JEE Main Important Topics must be studied but are hard to figure without proper data. That is why students must go the smarter way which might be easy but requires strong commitment. Every chapter in the JEE Main Syllabus is assigned a weightage of marks. This weightage is not fixed according to any official guidebook by JEE Main conducting authority. But, it is visible according to the question pattern followed in previous year JEE Main exams.

Now you have to break down all these chapters in 3-4 categories, such as most JEE Main important topics that carry high weightage of marks, JEE Main important topics that carry average weightage of marks and then JEE Main important topics that hold the minimum weightage of marks. Doing this will bring your attention to those topics which are crucial for the examination. You can also segregate the JEE Main Important Topics of various sections in accordance with difficulty level.

In this article, we are going to discuss important topics for JEE Main Paper-1. All the sections of Paper-1 will have 25 questions each and will be of 100 marks each. Out of the 25 questions, 5 will be Numerical Value Based Questions, which will have no negative marking. Let us divide the JEE Main Important topics into the same three sections i.e. Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.

JEE Main Important Topics for Physics

The Physics section contains around 21 chapters and some of the JEE Main important topics are given below-

  • Mechanics
  • Oscillations And Waves
  • Rotational Motion
  • Electrostatics
  • Atoms And Nuclei
  • Current Electricity
  • Magnetic effect of Current and Magnetism

The Oscillations and Waves chapter covers the maximum percentage of questions in the exam, which is around 10%. Other than these topics, we have seen questions from the topics like Electrodynamics, Modern Physics, Optics, etc. in the previous exams. So a student should first start with these topics as these topics have been frequently asked in the previous year papers. After completing these topics, you can pick the easiest topics like Unit and Dimensions, Measurement of errors and vectors. All you have to do is to understand the concepts of each topic.

The Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen chapter covers the maximum percentage of questions in the JEE Main exam. All the above-mentioned topics are the most important topics, which will be definitely asked in the examination. After completing these chapters, you should move towards some important chapters – Organic Compounds Containing Nitrogen, Redox Reactions, Biomolecules, Electrochemistry, Atomic Structure, Polymers, Solid State, Some Basic Concepts in Chemistry and Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties. After completing these chapters, you can head towards the simpler chapters like Hydrogen, States of Matter, Hydrocarbons, Surface Chemistry, etc.

Basic Tips for JEE Main Important Topics

  • Maintain Speed – With better practice, students will build speed in core topics. This speed must be maintained during the examination as well. Since there is no sectional timing, ensure that you solve enough questions from each section within 1 and a half hour (90 minutes) such that the score reaches the expected cutoff.
  • Topic-wise Mock Tests – Solving mock tests and practice papers can actually tell what level of preparation is needed. Solving the question papers enables the candidates to know the level of exam and their own preparation against it so they can work on their weak topics. Nowadays a deep analysis of mocks is easily available online, to understand accuracy, strong topics, time consuming topics and weak topics.
  • Accurate Answers  – If you follow the speed rule in the first 90 minutes, follow the accuracy rule in next 90 minutes. Instead of solving maximum questions, try solving what you can, but with accurate answers. This will help build your score and probably help in overall rank considered for IITs.
  • Revise every week – Organise your study time and revision time. Revision ensures you are on track with the topics that are not under purview but must be worked on. Take regular breaks and practice previous years’ JEE Main question papers. Revise the topics every alternate day or at least twice a week.
