NTA is likely to conduct JEE Main April and May sessions in July and August 2021, depending on the situation of COVID-19 pandemic in India.
JEE Main April and May sessions were postponed by the National Testing Agency (NTA) due to the spike in COVID-19 cases in the country. There are chances for the deferred JEE Main sessions to be conducted in late July and August 2021. Various options were presented in the high-level meeting on ‘conducting Class XII exams’. This meeting of state governments and the education minister was held on May 23, 2021. It is likely that CBSE might conduct board exams for 19 major subjects. Class XII board exams might be conducted from August 1 to 20, 2021.

Decision on Class XII Board Exams
The meeting chaired by Rajnath Singh and attended by various high level ministers discussed various alternatives available. The 2 major options regarding Class XII exams were presented in the meeting. The first was to conduct exams only for 19 major papers while the evaluation for the rest of the papers to be done on the basis of performance in major papers. The other option is to conduct exams in 2 phases with states having the option to choose the preferred dates from the 2 windows (July 15 – August 1 and August 5-26).
Fate of National Level Entrance Exams
The fate of all the entrance exams also depends on Class XII board exams. Entrance exams like JEE Main might also be conducted soon in July and August if CBSE decides to conduct Class XII exams in physical mode. A government source also exclaimed that “Everything rests on when the Class XII Board exams are conducted and in what format. NTA is working on several combinations depending on different situations that may arise.”
The Ministry of Education has asked various states to send suggestions on the viable options for Class XII exams. The situation will further be reviewed on June 1, 2021. If CBSE chooses to conduct exams in 2 phases, it is likely that the JEE Main April session might be conducted in the 2nd week of July or the 1st week of August. It is likely that the May session might be pushed further to the 1st week of September. NTA has also scheduled NEET UG to be conducted on August 1, 2021. However, if the Board exams get scheduled in August, the NEET might get postponed to the 1st or 2nd week of September 2021. As per an official, the registrations for the same is expected to commence from July 1. The exam will be conducted in pen and paper mode.
As per an NTA official, there is a chance that NTA might roll out the Central Universities Common Entrance Test (CUCET) in case of cancellation or change in pattern and duration of Class XII exams.
This delay in JEE Main April and May sessions is also leading to a delay in JEE Advanced 2021 as well because JEE Advanced can only be conducted after all sessions of the Main exam are conducted. The admission process for IITs, NITs, and GFTIs is again delayed this year too, due to the uncertain situation created by the pandemic.
