JEE Main Marks Vs Rank 2020: What Is JEE Main Percentile Score?

The JEE Main percentile score tells exactly how a candidate has performed in comparison to all the other students who appeared for the examination. The percentile is neither the percentage score (percentage score is the percentage of the maximum marks obtained by a student) nor the raw marks (the total and absolute marks secured by the student).

The percentile score of JEE Mains will tell exactly what percentage of the total number of candidates who appeared for the exam scored less than or equal to that particular percentile in that examination. The formula used to calculate JEE Main percentile score is:-

Percentile Score of a Student = 100 x (The number of students who secured a raw score or an actual score that is EQUAL TO OR LESS than the student) / (The total number of students who appeared in that session).

How Is JEE Rank Determined Using JEE Main Percentile Scores?

While compiling the merit list for the JEE Main and allotting the JEE Main ranks to aspirants, the total, as well as the subject-wise percentile scores are considered in the order given below.

  • Students obtaining a higher total percentile score will be given the first preference.
  • If any students’ marks collide, students who obtain a higher percentile score in Mathematics will be given consideration.
  • In case the tie persists after that as well, candidates who obtain a higher percentile score in Chemistry will be given consideration.
  • If the tie continues to exist, preference will be given to the candidate according to their age.
  • If the tie still exists after all these steps, the candidates will be given the rank according to the JEE main rank.
  • Apart from that, if the candidate appeared for JEE Main in the month of April and January both, the best of the two total percentile scores will be considered. In this case, the subject-wise percentile scores will not be taken into consideration. However, the subject-wise percentile will be considered if the candidate appears for JEE Main in either January or April.

Tie Breaker Guidelines: JEE Main 2020 Normalisation process

If two or more aspirants otain same percentile scores, then tie breaker rule is applied. It is dependent upon inter-se-merit criteria.

  • The aspirants get high score in mathematics, will be ranked as higher.
  • Next, if required, the the candidate, who get higher score in Physics, is considered as higher ranked.
  • If the tie still exists, then the applicant will be highly ranked if he/she will obtain higher marks in Chemistry than the others.
  • At last, the older candidate will get more preferences and will be ranked higher.

Tips to Get JEE Main 2020 Cutoff Marks

With the passage of time, competition among the aspirants has increased. Hence, to meet the cutoff marks, candidates are required to set a specific target. Read the following content to get information on the preparation tips related to the three sections of JEE Main exam.

  • Mathematics:
  1. As per the trend of the past three years, the Mathematics question level is easy to moderate.
  2. Three high scoring topics for the JEE main exam are Matrices, Determinants and Vector 3D.
  3. Apart from these, in the current year, students get questions from the chapters like Height and Distance and Trigonometry.
  4. If a candidate attempts 20 questions, he/she is likely to score 45-50 marks with 60% accuracy.
  5. This only applies if the candidate is attempting integer questions. Therefore, Candidates should focus more on integer questions rather than single choice questions.
  • Physics:
  1. Based on the past trend, Physics is considered as the toughest section in JEE main exam.
  2. Most of the candidates identify that the section contains lengthy questions.
  3. It is the major reason behind the complicacy of the questions.
  4. Moreover, the numerical questions are asked from class XI, while the conceptual questions are coming from XII.
  5. For instance, a candidate with 70% accuracy, can attempt 15 questions from the Physics section and can score more than 30 marks.
  • Chemistry:
  1. The aspirants have a perception that Chemistry is the easiest section among all.
  2.  If a candidate has 80% accuracy, she/he can score 60 scores by attaining 22 questions.

How to calculate JEE Main 2020 Result?

  • The JEE Main result is calculated by the process of normalization as the exams are held in various slots.
  • Ranks are determined on the basis of percentile scores secured by the candidates
  • The result is calculated using the following formula:
    • JEE Main Score = 4 marks x number of correct answers – number of wrong answers x 1
  • The actual score will be used to obtain the JEE Main rank of the candidate.

Tie-break criteria (other than IITs)

Higher percentile in Mathematics > Higher percentile in Physics > Higher percentile in Chemistry > candidate elder in age

Note: In case the tie is not broken, the candidates will be given the same ranks while declaring JEE Main Result 2020.
