It is very less likely that any of the competitive exams such as JEE Main 2021 shall be cancelled even after the worst second wave of COVID-19.
After the cancellation of Class XII board exams by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and several state boards, the National Testing Agency (NTA) is due to hold a meeting to take a decision on the status of JEE Main and NEET 2021. The decision to cancel the board exams for class XII was taken in a high-level meeting chaired by the Prime Minister on June 1st, 2021. The decision was taken in consideration of the spike in COVID-19 cases during the second wave of the pandemic.

However, the chances of the entrance tests getting cancelled is very less as it is pertinent to fill the college seats through competitive tests. JEE Main and NEET were also conducted last year amidst the pandemic, while following all COVID-19 safety protocols. Both the exams are necessary as they act as the gateway to engineering and medical colleges throughout the country. So the officials are trying to figure out ways in which these exams can be conducted while taking all precautions.
Announcing Exam Dates Might Lead To Uncertainty
As quoted by India Today, a senior government official said, “The government is aware that the entrance examinations need to be conducted. Unlike the board exams, they cannot be cancelled because college seats are filled up on a competitive test basis.” He also said that giving a timeline for the exam dates right now may lead to anxiety among candidates and the authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
The Education Ministry will hold a high level meeting to deliberate on the right time to hold the entrance examinations like JEE Main 2021, CUCET 2021, NEET 2021 soon. The meeting will be attended by Vice Chancellors of various universities.
Review of COVID-19 Situation Before Finalising Dates
The 3rd and 4th sessions of JEE Main 2021 were scheduled to be conducted in April and May. But they were postponed due to the spread of the second wave of the pandemic. However, NTA has notified that revised dates will be announced at least 15 dates prior to the exam.
JEE Advanced, which was earlier scheduled to be conducted on July 3, has also been postponed. Scores of these exams are considered by all top engineering colleges of the country like IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs to grant admission to B.Tech courses. While JEE Advanced is the entrance exam for admission to IITs, JEE Main scores are considered for admission to all other colleges.
According to the announcement by the Education ministry, the final dates for NEET UG 2021 will also be announced after a review of the COVID-19 situation in the country. Aspiring candidates are advised to keep a check on the official website of JEE Main 2021 and NEET UG 2021 for any latest updates.
